Faithful In Every Season

Scripture: Psalm 23:1–6 (NLT)

The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.

Psalm 23 describes a life under the care of a shepherd. It includes rest, guidance, danger, and a table set in the presence of enemies. God's faithfulness is not confined to the peaceful scenes. The Shepherd remains present through the whole journey.

Receive care before you try to keep going

The psalm begins with provision and rest. The sheep depend on the shepherd for what they cannot provide alone. For people used to proving their usefulness, that dependence can feel uncomfortable. Yet receiving God's care is part of faith, not a failure of it.

Rest may include a quiet prayer, accepting help, or setting aside work long enough to attend to the people and limits God has given you. None of these removes every responsibility. They remind us that we are creatures who need care, rather than the source of our own strength.

You are not alone in the valley

When the psalm turns toward the darkest valley, its language becomes personal: the writer speaks directly to God. The comfort is God's nearness. The rod and staff describe a shepherd's protection and guidance in a place the sheep cannot safely navigate alone.

This does not mean faithful people never feel afraid or encounter loss. It means we can bring fear into the presence of the One who accompanies us. The table among enemies offers a similar picture: God's care is real even before every threat has gone away.

Which part of the psalm resembles your season: the need for rest, a difficult path, or a place of danger? Pray from that scene today. Ask for the help you need, and receive practical care from others when it is offered. The Shepherd's goodness gives us reason to keep following, one day at a time.
