Build Your Life on Jesus

Scripture: Matthew 7:24–29 (NIV)

Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with a picture that is both simple and searching: two people build houses, and both houses face the storm. The difference is not whether difficulty comes. The difference is the foundation beneath the house.

One builder hears Jesus’ words and puts them into practice. His life is built on rock. The other hears the same words but does not act on them. His life is built on sand.

It is possible to be near the words of Jesus without allowing them to become the foundation of our lives. We can hear sermons, read Scripture, agree with truth, and still keep our deepest decisions rooted in fear, approval, comfort, or control.

Jesus is not calling us to collect information about Him. He is calling us to trust Him enough to obey.

That obedience is rarely glamorous. It looks like forgiving when resentment feels justified, telling the truth when it costs something, choosing faithfulness in a hidden place, and building rhythms that keep us close to God. Over time, those choices become a foundation.

Storms reveal what has been holding us. When pressure comes, we discover whether our security has been built on circumstances, another person, success, or Jesus Himself. A strong foundation does not mean a storm-free life. It means the storm does not get the final word.

Where is Jesus inviting you to move from hearing to doing? Maybe it is the text you need to send, the private habit you need to bring into the light, or the person you need to forgive. Do not start with ten changes. Start with the next act of obedience in front of you.

The rock is not your ability to perform perfectly. The rock is Christ. Build your life on Him, and when the winds rise, you will find that His faithfulness is stronger than the storm.
