Rooted and Grounded
Colossians 2:6–7
Elevated Church
Scripture: Colossians 2:6–7; Hebrews 2:1 (NLT)
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
Colossians 2:6–7 and Hebrews 2:1 offer two pictures worth holding together: growing roots and resisting drift. Both passages call believers to continue attending to the truth they have received.
Grow from the foundation you received
In Colossians, Paul tells the church to continue living in Christ as they received Him. The surrounding chapter warns against teaching that would pull them away from Him. Growth does not require finding something more impressive than Jesus. It means being established more deeply in Him.
Roots grow through sustained nourishment. Reading Scripture in context, praying honestly, gathering with believers, and practicing what we learn are ordinary ways we remain attentive to Christ. They are not a system for earning His acceptance. They help us live from the faith we have received.
Thankfulness belongs in Paul's picture, too. As our lives become grounded in Christ, we learn to notice grace rather than taking credit for every sign of growth.
Pay attention before you drift
Hebrews warns its readers to attend carefully to what they have heard. Drift can happen through neglect: we stop listening, withdraw from helpful relationships, or allow a familiar compromise to become normal. It can also involve deliberate choices. The warning invites honest attention, not a simplistic diagnosis of everyone's story.
You may recognize a place where you have become less rooted. Naming it is a beginning. Ask what has been receiving your attention and what has quietly lost its place. Invite a trusted believer to help you return to a sustainable rhythm.
For this week, choose one practice you can actually keep. Read a short passage slowly, pray at a regular time, or reconnect with your church community. Stay with it long enough to listen and respond. Deep roots develop through repeated dependence on Jesus.
