Awake: Live Like it Matters

Scripture: John 10:1–10 (NLT)

1 “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!
2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.
5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant,
7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.
8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them.
9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

In John 10, Jesus uses the familiar picture of a shepherd and a flock to describe His care. The shepherd knows the sheep, calls them, and leads them. Jesus also describes Himself as the gate: the way into safety and life with God.

Learn whose voice you are following

The sheep recognize the shepherd's voice through familiarity. For us, learning to follow Jesus begins with attending to His words and character in Scripture. We read, pray, and practice obedience in community. Over time, we learn to question voices that draw us toward dishonesty, contempt, or self-protection at any cost.

This does not mean every strong impression is a message from Jesus. We test what we think we hear against Scripture and seek wise counsel. A voice that asks us to abandon the way of Christ does not become trustworthy because it feels urgent.

Receive the life Jesus gives

Jesus contrasts the thief's destruction with the life He brings. That life is richer than a promise of constant comfort, success, or excitement. It is life in relationship with Him, shaped by His care and opened toward others.

To live as though that matters is to bring ordinary decisions into the relationship. We can pay attention to a neglected person, tell the truth about a habit, or make space to pray before another busy day. These actions do not earn the Shepherd's care. They are ways of following the One who already calls us.

Where has your attention been pulled away from Jesus? Read John 10:1–10 slowly and name the competing voice you most readily follow. Ask for help to recognize His teaching and respond to it. Then choose one concrete act of trust. A life awake to Jesus is built through repeated attention to the Shepherd.
