Water Baptism: A Biblical Guide to Taking the Next Step in Faith

What is Water Baptism?

Water baptism is a public act of faith and obedience in which a believer is immersed in water. At Elevated, we practice immersion as a sign of sharing in Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Christians sometimes use the word sacrament for a sacred sign through which faith is expressed. Romans 6:3–4 explains the connection between baptism and new life in Christ.

What Does Water Baptism Mean?

Water baptism is one of the foundational teachings of Christianity (Hebrews 6) and was often the first act of obedience after someone declared faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism represents the transformation of a believer:

• Being fully submerged in water symbolizes the death and burial of the old self.
• Rising from the water represents new life in Christ (Romans 6:4).
• Believers continue to be transformed by the same power that resurrected Jesus (Colossians 2).

Baptism Identifies Us with Other Christians

The Bible describes baptism as something that unites all believers in Christ:

• Galatians 3:26-29 — "For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." (NIV, excerpt)

1. Baptism Follows Repentance

Acts 2:37-38 — Peter responded: "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." (NIV, excerpt)

2. Baptism Follows Faith in Jesus

Acts 8:35–38 — Philip explains the good news about Jesus, and the Ethiopian official asks to be baptized. Some translations include a confession of faith in verse 37; the NLT places it in a manuscript footnote. The passage still shows baptism as a response to hearing about Jesus. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be baptized to be saved?

No. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is an important step of obedience and a public declaration of faith, but it is not required for salvation.

At what age should someone be baptized?

Baptism is for those who are old enough to understand their decision to follow Jesus. We encourage believers to be baptized when they can personally express their faith.

What should I expect at my baptism?

Baptism at Elevated will take place at the beach or in a pool. You will be submerged under water and lifted back to symbolize dying to yourself and being raised to a new life in Christ. It is a joyful celebration with family, friends, and your church community!

When should I get baptized?
